Nominations for Best Picture 2010 are now EXTENDED!

Welcome to the Academy of Awesome!  This round, we will be crowning a new winner for Best Picture 2010.  2010's real winner was The King's Speech.  Will it win again?

Was TheKing's Speech really winner-worthy?  Should another film have captured top spot?  Now is your chance to have your say!  Simply nominate a movie/film in the comments of this post, following these simple rules:

  • It must have been released in 2010.
  • It must have had a public release (no Cannes-only films).
  • Repeat nominations ARE allowed, whether they have won in the past, or not.
  • Submissions are due by Wednesday THURSDAY 11:59 p.m. EST.

Once the nominees have been gathered, the Academy will find time (hey, we have day jobs) over the following week to watch the films, with the deadline being the following Wednesday.  After that, deliberations will be held, and a winner will be announced by that Sunday (or a.s.a.p. after that).  On the same day, nominations will be opened for 2009!

EDIT:
Due to a short list, we're leaving the nominations open another day.  There also seem to always been some last-minute SURPRISE nominations DURING deliberations.  Stay tuned!

Academy of Awesome: At Sea Edition!

Some of the Academy of Awesome recently convened at sea!  This was not for nominations or voting, but instead to decide on some matters of business which were left hanging.  These details regarding teh operation of the AoA are detailed below.

And the winner for Best Picture 1980 is...

We deliberated the list.  ...and then some!  A few late entries poured in, including The Shining, and Herbie Goes Bananas.  But in the end, there could be only one winner.  And we'll find out right after the break.

Best Picture 1980 (2012) Nominees

And the nominees are...

The AoA will deliberate Monday evening, and deliver a winner that night.  We will also be discussing how things will work going forward, including which year to visit next.  1980 was chosen purely at random, so we may begin from the very beginning, maybe work backwards, or maybe pick back up at 1981.  Both decisions will be posted as soon as we make them.

Hang on to your popcorn, we're getting to the good stuff!

Nominations for Best Picture 1980 are now CLOSED!

Last year, Best Picture (somehow) went to "Smokey and the Bandit 2."  This means it is (regretfully) automatically entered in this year's Best Picture 1980 nomination cycle.

Due to some questionable entries last week, we the AoA wish to re-express the rules for nominating a movie/film for consideration:
  • It must have been released in 1980.
  • It must have had a public release (no Cannes-only films).
  • Repeat nominations ARE allowed, whether they have won in the past, or not.

Also, please keep in mind, the nominations are judged on Quality, Plot/Story, Characters, Ingenuity, Special Effects, Lasting Effect on Culture, and more or less, depending on how we feel.

Submissions are due by Wednesday 11:59 p.m. EST.  The Academy of Awesome will deliberate the nominations, and a winner will be chosen and posted by Friday.  Good luck, and keep the good films coming!  (Please.  GOOD films.  If I see "9 to 5" come up again, someone is going to get hurt.)

UPDATE 2:
Since it really wasn't fair to spring a deadline of TONIGHT on everyone (and from not expecting such positive and immediate interest in this), we are extending the nomination deadline to 11:59 p.m. EST, THURSDAY.  Please leave your nominations in the comments--even mentioning a movie counts (as you can probably tell), so choose wisely!

UPDATE 1:
The current nominees (in no particular order) are...

*BUZZER* "Mad Max" was released in 1979, and "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" released in 1981!

"Mon oncle d'Amérique" was nominated for an Oscar (1981), but I can't find where it was released beyond Cannes.  If someone can provide a feature release date, I'll upgrade it to nominee.

I could only find a Wikipedia article for "Gamera: Super Monster."  If someone can provide better street creds, I'll bump it to full nominee.
